Brain stimulation improves motor functions in stroke patients

Research has shown that patients who suffered from strokes had an improvement in their motor functioning, independence and movement following deep brain stimulation.

Participants underwent a surgery which involved the surgical implantation of electrodes into the brain called the cerebellum. These electrodes were used to deliver small electric pulses to help people recover control of their movements. Following the surgery, participants completed months of physical therapy.

Strokes can cause long-term disabilities. Persistent neurological issues can effect the quality of life and productivity of individuals.
